Lotus seeds/makhana is a good source of calcium and you can also make various items like kheer,snack or curry with it.I though end up making this simple and tasty snack most of the times.
If you like to try them you can even check my phool makhana kheer recipe which I posted earlier.If you have never tasted this I strongly recommend you to try these lotus seeds,they are addictive and healthy.Try to replace your good old pop corn packets with this healthy guilt free makhana snack to munch, while watching your favorite movie/show.
Spicy Phool Makhana(Puffed Lotus Seeds) Recipe:
Ingredients:
1 1/2 cup Phool Makhana/Puffed Lotus Seeds
1/2 tsp Chaat Masala
1/4 tsp Pepper Powder
1/2 tsp Red chili powder
1/2 tsp Kala Namak/Black Salt
Salt to taste
2 tbsp Ghee/Olive oil

Spicy Phool Makhana(Puffed Lotus Seeds) Recipe:
Ingredients:
1 1/2 cup Phool Makhana/Puffed Lotus Seeds
1/2 tsp Chaat Masala
1/4 tsp Pepper Powder
1/2 tsp Red chili powder
1/2 tsp Kala Namak/Black Salt
Salt to taste
2 tbsp Ghee/Olive oil
Method:
- Heat 1 tbsp ghee/Olive oil in a kadai and add phool makhana to it and roast them until crisp over low flame.This takes 8-10mins.Pinch a nut and taste it whether it is crispy or not.Remove them and keep them aside.
- Heat 1 tbsp ghee in the same pan over low-medium flame and add quickly red chili powder,pepper powder,chaat masala,Salt and kala namak and fry it for 10 seconds.Take care not to burn the spices.
- Add roasted phool makhana to it and mix well until the phool makhana is coated well with all the spices.
- Reduce the flame and fry for 2-3 mins.
- Once they cool down store them in an air tight container.
Serve them as an evening snack with a cuppa or when ever you want to munch on in between meals.
Notes:
- You can store it up to a week.If the makhana becomes soft just pop them in a pan and roast them until crisp.
- You can experiment and adjust spices according to your taste buds.
- Ghee/olive oil can be replaced with regular oil.I recommend ghee for its taste.
- I think you can even use butter though I never tried but I am sure it will add nice flavor.
- Another interesting combination,I am thinking of replicating the caramel popcorn replacing the popcorn with phool makhana.Though I never tried it is just an idea,if you try please let me know how it turned out.
- For a Vegan version use olive oil instead of ghee.
very recently i heard about this lotus seed ... saw some curry recipe in tv made out of it... your's is super spicy crunchy snacks... must try it...

ReplyDeleteYour recipes are good, however when I tried this particular recipe. My makhana's did not get coated with masala like yours...wonder why? Anyway ....thanks for sharing many good recipes.
@Nivedita....you should be really quick in mixing once you add the makhana to the spiced up oil, other than that there is no trick to give it a neat coat..

We like Phool Makana with maple syrup and cayenne! Just heat Phool with 1 T. Ghee until hot to the touch (keep it moving as you heat) , add a little maple syrup maybe 1T. for 1 to 1.5 cups of Phool - sprinkle with cayenne to your taste! Easy Sweet/spicy and fast!
